The work with refugees and asylum seekers began in 2000. St George's Crypt became a venue for English (ESOL) classes run by Park Lane College, Leeds. These classes run on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10.00am – 12.30pm
Work with asylum seekers and refugees has become a significant area of the Crypt´s services. The work was originally recognised by RefugeePlus (funded by JobCentrePlus and the European Social Fund). The project aimed to improve the employablity of the client group, and resulted in successes including the employment of 2 refugees at the Crypt, development of a successful mentoring programme in conjunction with Leeds Metropolitan University and development of a partnership with the Leeds Health Access Team in offering health screening, English classes and drop-in facilities for the client group.
