Staff, service users and Trustees of St George’s Crypt – the well-known Leeds charity working with homeless and disadvantaged people for 80 years – have been very distressed at the magnitude of the Haiti earthquake disaster and which has resulted in such a terrible death toll along with countless people injured and hundreds of thousands homeless.
Chris Fields, CEO of the Crypt, said, “We are so conscious that when a disaster of this magnitude occurs, the devastation caused is of a scale which makes us aware that we need to respond. Our service users can at least have a roof over their head , a bed for the night, and a hot meal – all things which those made homeless in Haiti cannot be guaranteed at this time”.
Crypt staff will pray daily for those whose lives have been shattered by the earthquake, and will place a candle in the chapel as a reminder of their plight and a way to stand in solidarity with those who have lost so much.

Up to 100 people packed the Assisi Café in the Crypt to witness the licensing of Revd Steve Dye as the Diocesan Chaplain for the Homeless by the Bishop of Ripon and Leeds, John Packer.
