In the past at this time of year many schools, churches and the public at large are very thoughtful in donating lots of consumables which we use on a day to day basis both here at the Crypt and at our food parcel service in Armley. These donations help us to continue supporting the vulnerable and needy in our city, but we also need help to heat the building, cook the food, wash the bedding - - -. Last month we washed 456 sets of bedding – that’s an enormous amount of washing powder.
At St George’s Crypt we feed 70 people each day and offer 36 beds each night but we provide something even more important and that is community. Community provides a great security net when in need; it encourages people to get involved which makes people feel valued; it creates a sense of belonging. All together this helps to nurture self-esteem and along with that comes confidence which form the building blocks to a new life.
In or out of school; large gesture or small favour it all counts. Bake some cakes, loan a book, plait your friend’s hair, paint their nails, wash up, sweep the drive – whatever; be as creative as you like! You can ‘make someone’s day’ and by return their donation will directly support the crucial work of the Crypt.
