The "Give Me Some Credit" voucher scheme was launched in 2013 to provide a constructive and practical way to support people begging for money for food on the streets. The books of five vouchers can be bought for £5 by members of the public and then handed to anyone on the streets with confidence that this person can use the voucher to receive support if they are genuinely in need. The voucher scheme provides a means to offer support to those in need without encouraging begging.
On 1 December 2016 we decided to give free meals to all. We have received large donations of food over the last few months from the general public (thank you!) and a generous long-term supply of meat from Dalziels, a local wholesaler. We also held a client consultation, and it was decided to have an optional donation instead of asking for a £1 contribution from those in receipt of benefits.
The voucher scheme continues to be a way of giving with confidence. Instead of giving money that may be used to feed a drink or drug habit, the person buying the voucher is signposting the individual to us, so that they can get more than just a meal and a shower - they can get support and help into accommodation, a change of clothing including new socks and underwear, a chance to speak to our visiting medical practitioners, and they can also take part in our training and engagement sessions. These services are all provided free of charge to anyone in need.
The money paid for the vouchers still goes directly towards the provision of vital services for homeless and vulnerable adults. That being said, we are currently reviewing the voucher scheme so that it also has a value to the person receiving it. Knowing that they can access our services already, what would make them want to accept the vouchers from the public, so that passers-by can still show that they care, whilst signposting the individual to St George's Crypt?
The vouchers are available from:
- St George’s Crypt
- St George’s Crypt charity shops in Armley and Pudsey
- Nurture cafes at Trinity Church (Boar Lane) and Armley (Town Street)
- All 13 Leeds Building Society branches in Leeds
- Libraries (Central, Cross Gates, Headingley, Morley and Wetherby)
- The Management Suite on the second floor of the Victoria Gate shopping centre
The vouchers are also available at various churches, where people are selling them to their congregation. Please speak to us if you cannot buy them from your church.
Since its launch, the voucher scheme has led many new people through our doors who may not have accessed our services otherwise.
Please support this scheme however you can and contact St George’s Crypt Fundraising Department on 0113 245 9061 if you have any questions, or email firstname.lastname@example.org
We would love to hear from you if you have any feedback.
